Miu Miu Naked Lady Collar!

1 Jul

Miu Miu has a knack for producing gotta-have-it items. When these Spring ’10 collars ($180) were introduced to fine department stores last year, they flew off the shelves almost instantaneously. Not sure if they’re still available for purchase, but I attempted to make it myself. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a print-ready image of the reclining naked lady (most DIYers seemed to like the cute cat or swallows), so I’ve uploaded a .JPG of my painstaking print-trace-scan-Illustrator magic method’s result. You’re welcome.

Materials:

  • Thrift store button-up shirt in a bright color ($1.50)
  • Matching thread ($2)
  • One sheet of iron-on transfer paper (stolen from Amy)
  • White acrylic paint (lying around)
  • Fine tip black paint pen (stolen from Amy, again)

Step 1: With small scissors or seam ripper, remove the stitching that connects the collar to the shirt. Once successfully removed, sew the opening shut with matching thread.

Step 2: Print out the naked ladies on iron-on transfer paper and iron on as the directions indicate. Note: I first attempted to use transfer paper made for dark-colored fabric, but this was a fail, over and over again. The parchment paper back wouldn’t peel off properly after I ironed the transfer on. I had more success with regular transfer paper, but because it was transparent (instead of white), I needed to paint over it. The plastic though makes an ideal surface for acrylic.

Step 3: With white acrylic paint, careful paint over the plastic and allow to dry. Then, with a fine tip black paint pen, draw in the outline and the rest of the image. Voila!

Feeling the ’50s granny vibe. Hairspray not included >.>
